This book is my bible for nutritional therapy!
Julia Ross writes from 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist and clinic director, working with people suffering from addictions, eating disorders, and various mood disorders. She began to discover that her clients who did not respond to psychotherapy were suffering from real biochemical disorders that responded well to nutritional therapy.
"If you're feeling depressed, anxious, or stressed, you're not alone. We're in a bad-mood epidemic, a hundred times more likely to have significant mood problems than people born a hundred years ago. And these problems are on the rise."
She makes a distinction between real emotions and what she calls "false moods" – a distorted emotional state that has no apparent cause, or just as often, is an over-reaction to a real emotional trigger.
"If your brain runs low on these mood transmitters," says Julia Ross, " –Whether because of a minor genetic miscue, because it's used them up coping with too much stress, or because you aren't eating the specific foods it needs– it stops producing normal emotions on a consistent basis."
There are 4 mood neurotransmitters which are covered in this book. You might be low in one or several of them, and if you are, it will have significant and distinctive effects on your mood and sense of well-being.
Early on, there is a questionnaire to help you discover which of these 4 mood neurotransmitters might be out of balance for you, and the book goes on to discuss the effects of each particular deficiency, and what supplements and nutritional plans might work best.
While general nutrition can do wonders, the key to dramatic improvement often lies in amino acid supplementation. Each of the neurotransmitters has its own precursor nutrients, which can include vitamins such as B6, minerals such as Magnesium, and a specific amino acid that is needed for your brain to produce that neurotransmitter. If any of these is lacking, your brain can't make enough of the neurotransmitter, and you will be prone to a mood imbalance. But supplementation can reverse the deficiency more quickly, and often gets amazingly fast results.
Here's what people are saying about The Mood Cure:
"Information in this book saved my life, literally."
"If you are depressed, anxiety ridden, addiction ruled, even just not yourself, I highly recommend trying amino acid therapy....Overall, my state of being is 100% improved over what it even was on antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills."
"I've had mood difficulties my entire life and have consumed the usual therapies, medications and hormone replacement therapies and remedies without a "cure". What was most helpful about this book was the distinction Ross invites you to make between emotions caused by real events and thoughts versus "false moods" that are physiological states. Psychotherapy doesn't help correct physiological imbalances as efficiently as seeking a physiological remedy."
"Overall, my state of being is 100% improved over what it even was on antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills. This isn't to say I am 100% cured, but I am 100% improved."
